# Question sets

A question set is a list of questions any activity's Questions panel can ask. Build one here, or reuse one across activities.

Sets live in [Teach → Question sets](/dashboard/questions), listed by the course and unit that ask them. You can also press **New set** on an activity's Questions panel. Learners never see the answers.

## Write questions

::: steps
1. **Start a set.** Press **New question set** and give it a **Title**.
2. **Add a question.** Press **Add a question** and choose its type.
3. **Add help.** Give it up to five **Hints**, an **Explanation**, a **Skill** and **Points**.
4. **Check it.** **Preview** shows the question with its key marked.
:::

The types are **Multiple choice**, **Select all that apply**, **Fill in**, **Fill the blanks**, **Put in order**, **Short answer**, **Open answer**, **Program** and **Spoken answer**. Open answers and programs aren't graded automatically. Short and open answers can **Show the model answer after they answer**. A set holds up to 200 questions.

## Import questions

Press **Import questions**, then paste them or choose a PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel or CSV file.

Spreadsheets with a header row, lettered choices (Moodle's Aiken format) and JSON are read without AI; **Formats read without AI** has templates. Anything else can be **Read with AI**, which keeps your questions and answers as they are. Untick what you don't want and press **Add**.

## Draft with AI

**Draft with AI** writes questions from your material:

::: steps
1. **Pick the material.** In **What to draw on**, choose **Your documents** (up to 10, whole or by sections or pages), **A file**, or **Text**, with an optional focus.
2. **Say what to write.** In **What to write**, set how many (up to 30), a level and the types.
3. **Choose who writes.** In **Who writes them**, pick a key, which is billed, and a model.
:::

Each question comes with a skill, hints and an explanation, drawn from your material only. Nothing joins the set until you press **Add**. Spoken answers and programs aren't drafted.

## Feedback and tries

Feedback, tries and hints are set on each activity's Questions panel, so one set can be practice in one activity and a quiz in another:

- **Right or wrong is shown**: **After each answer** for practice, **At the end** for a quiz, **Never** for a test.
- **Tries per question**: 0 for any number, up to 10.
- **Hints**: learners open them one at a time, and each is recorded.

Pre-tests and post-tests always get one try and no hints.

## Changing and archiving

**Asked in** lists every activity that uses the set. A saved change shows in all of them and makes a new version; answers already given keep theirs. To change one activity only, use **Make a copy** on the Question sets page.

**Archive** removes a set from the list and from new panels. Activities already using it keep working.
